Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical Care aims to be a leading biomedical review journal, providing reviews and comment on highly topical subjects and the latest breakthroughs in basic, clinical and translational research. This includes basic and clinical research aimed at understanding disease processes and clinical practice of importance to anaesthesia and critical care. The aim is to stimulate debate on new research, cover controversial topics, or provide a new framework for, or interpretation of, an old problem or current issue, or speculate on the implications of recent research and clinical advances in health care infrastructure concerns at national or international levels. Many of these subjects also raise ethical, legal and financial issues and TACC may include articles on such matters.The journal's objective is to provide a platform for discussion, analysis and debate of these topics across a diverse, multidisciplinary audience of basic scientists and clinicians, who share the common goal of understanding anaesthesiology, pain, pharmacology, critical care and related subject areas with a view to new clinical practice. Communication of the emerging concepts and ideas will facilitate progress in exciting and evolving field of anaesthesia and critical care.Reviews and Opinion articles form the foundation of each bimonthly issue. Reviews objectively chronicle recent and important developments. Opinion articles provide a forum for debate and hypothesis. The Focus section includes short articles highlighting topical issues and providing comment on recent research papers of particular note. Articles are carefully commissioned, peer-reviewed and edited to provide authoritative, critical and accessible insights.Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical Care also welcomes correspondence. Letters may address topics raised in recent issues of the journal, or other matters of general interest to the field. The decision to publish rests with the Editor-in-Chief at all times. The author(s) of articles discussed in a Letter will normally be invited to reply.If you are interested in suggesting an article for consideration, please submit a one-page summary with a list of key references. Authors should note that all articles are peer reviewed and publication cannot be guaranteed.

Trends in Environmental Analytical Chemistry is devoted to publishing concise and critical overviews of the rapid changes and development in the field of environmental analytical chemistry. The acquisition of good quality chemical data in environmental systems and the sound interpretation of this data is the basis for enhancing our understanding of the environment. TrEAC provides timely coverage of the novel and innovative use of analytical methods for the investigation of environmentally relevant substances and problems. Topics of interest include critical updates on the improvements in environmental analytical chemistry, achievements and challenges of modern techniques and possible future developments in the specific fields, such as sampling methodology, techniques for remote measurements, analytical instrumentation, miniaturization and automation, determination of trace atmospheric constituents of anthropogenic and natural origin, detection and identification of organic pollutants in water, soil and biota, determination and speciation of heavy metals and radionuclides in the environment, environmental references materials; method validation and chemometrics in environmental analysis.The aim of TrEAC is to publish concise reviews covering the latest advances in environmental analytical chemistry. Reviews should comprise about 4000 words and include several figures and tables. Reviews should interpret rather than be comprehensive. References should be limited to about 60. Primary research papers describing the results of the authors' research work are not within the scope of TrEAC. Please note that most articles published in the journal are by invitation of one of the Editors. If you wish to submit a paper to TrEAC and have not been invited by one of the Editors, please submit first a short proposal (max 1 page) to the Editor-in-Chief. Trends in Neuroscience and Education aims to bridge the gap between our increasing basic cognitive and neuroscience understanding of learning and the application of this knowledge in educational settings. It provides a forum for original translational research on using systems neuroscience findings to improve educational outcome, as well as for reviews on basic and applied research as relevant to education, project reports, best practice examples, and opinions regarding evidence based educational policies and related subjects.Just as 200 years ago, medicine was little more than a mixture of bits of knowledge, fads and plain quackery without a basic grounding in a scientific understanding of the body, and just as in the middle of the nineteenth century, Hermann von Helmholtz, Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke, Emil Du Bois-Reymond and a few others got together and drew up a scheme for what medicine should be (i.e., applied natural science), we believe that this can be taken as a model for what should happen in the field of education. In many countries, education is merely the field of ideology, even though we know that how children learn is not a question of left or right political orientation.Contrary to the skeptics (who claim that "brain science […] is not ready to relate neuronal processes to classroom outcomes", Cf. Hirsh-Pasek K, Bruer JT, 2007), we believe that we know today more about the neuroscience of learning than Helmholtz et al. back then knew about the body. In fact, from our perspective very little was known, as cellular pathology, microbiology and pharmacology hardly existed as domains of scientific investigation, let alone as tools for physicians. But the very idea - medicine is applied science - caught on and led to unprecedented and dramatic improvements in medicine.In our view, this is precisely what we must do in order to make progress in education. "You claim all learning is taking place in the brain. If that's so, which type of preschool is most effective?" - From a medical perspective, it is obvious that a neuroscientist cannot answer such questions occasionally posed by educators or educational policy makers. But it is just as clear that the answers will come from research informed by developmental cognitive neuroscience. Trends in Neuroscience and Education will foster activities on the translational research that is needed.Neuroscience is to education what biology is to medicine and physics is to architecture. Biochemistry is not enough to cure a patient, and physics is not enough to build a bridge. But you cannot perform great work, neither in medicine nor in architecture, against the laws of physics or biology. And in fact, they will inform you about many constraints and rule out a great many of projects right from the start as failures.
