The scope of Biofabrication focuses on the state-of-the-art research and development of biomanufacturing processes, process science, modeling and design. That is, using cells, proteins and biomaterials as building blocks to manufacture biological systems and/or therapeutic products. It includes the following topics:

Bioinspiration and Biomimetics publishes research involving the study and distillation of principles and functions found in biological systems that have been developed through evolution, and application of this knowledge to produce novel and exciting basic technologies and new approaches to solving scientific problems. It provides a forum for interdisciplinary research which acts as a conduit to facilitate the two-way flow of ideas and understanding between the extensive bodies of knowledge of the different disciplines. It has two principal aims: to draw on biology to enrich engineering and to draw from engineering to enrich biology.The journal aims to include input from across all intersecting areas of both fields. In biology, this would include work in all fields from physiology to ecology, with either zoological or botanical focus. In engineering, this would include both design and practical application of biomimetic or bioinspired devices and systems. Typical areas of interest include: systems, designs and structure communication and navigation cooperative behaviour self-organizing biological systems self-healing and self-assembly aerial locomotion and aerospace applications of biomimetics biomorphic surface and subsurface systems marine dynamics: swimming and underwater dynamics applications of novel materials biomechanics; including movement, locomotion, fluidics cellular behaviour sensors and senses biomimetic or bioinformed approaches to geological exploration.

Biological Cybernetics is an interdisciplinary medium for experimental, theoretical and application-oriented aspects of information processing in organisms, including sensory, motor, cognitive, and ecological phenomena. Topics covered include: experimental studies of biological systems including quantitative modeling; computational, technical, or theoretical studies with relevance for understanding biological information processing; and artificial implementation of biological information processing and self-organizing principles. Under the main aspects of performance and function of systems, emphasis is laid on communication between life sciences and technical/theoretical disciplines.   

Biologicals provides a modern and multidisciplinary international forum for news, debate, and original research on all aspects of biologicals used in human and veterinary medicine. The journal publishes original papers, reviews, and letters relevant to the development, production, quality control, and standardization of biological derived from both novel and established biotechnologies. Special issues are produced to reflect topics of particular international interest and concern.Three types of papers are welcome: original research reports, short papers, and review articles. Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology promotes basic and applied research that integrate knowledge in the allied fields of biomechanics and mechanobiology. The journal highlights approaches that are experimental, theoretical, or computational and that address phenomena at the nano, micro, or macro levels. This journal focuses on investigations that quantify the mechanical environment in health, disease, or injury, or identify and quantify mechanosensitive responses and their mechanisms. The journal also focuses on papers that detail interrelations between mechanics and biological processes or report discoveries that advance therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Analytical and computational models based on solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, or thermomechanics and their interactions are strongly emphasized. In addition, the journal encourages reports on new experimental methods that expand measurement capabilities and new mathematical methods that facilitate analysis.

ioprinting is a broad-spectrum, multidisciplinary journal that covers all aspects of 3D fabrication technology involving biological tissues, organs and cells for medical and biotechnology applications. Topics covered include nanomaterials, biomaterials, scaffolds, 3D printing technology, imaging and CAD/CAM software and hardware, post-printing bioreactor maturation, cell and biological factor patterning, biofabrication, tissue engineering and other applications of 3D bioprinting technology. Bioprinting publishes research reports describing novel results with high clinical significance in all areas of 3D bioprinting research. Bioprinting issues contain a wide variety of review and analysis articlescovering topics relevant to 3D bioprinting ranging from basic biological, material and technical advances to pre-clinical and clinical applications of 3D bioprinting.

The journal Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering is an international peer-reviewed forum for discussion between engineering and biological science to find efficient solutions in the development and improvement of bioprocesses. The journal focuses attention on multidisciplinary approaches for integrative bioprocess design. Coverage includes rational manipulation of biosystems through metabolic engineering techniques to provide new biocatalysts. The journal examines model-based design of bioprocesses, such as up-stream processing, bioreactor operation and downstream processing, leading to new and sustainable production processes. The journal offers new approaches for design of cellular systems, taking into account the environment and constraints of technical production processes, integration of recombinant technology and process design, as well as bioinformatics and process systems engineering. The journal publishes original papers, short communications and invited reviews.

Biosensors & Bioelectronics is the principal international journal devoted to research, design, development and application of biosensors and bioelectronics. It is an interdisciplinary journal serving professionals with an interest in the exploitation of biological materials and designs in novel diagnostic and electronic devices including sensors, DNA chips, electronic noses, lab-on-a-chip and µ-TAS.Biosensors are defined as analytical devices incorporating a biological material (e.g. tissue, microorganisms, organelles, cell receptors, enzymes, antibodies, nucleic acids, natural products etc.), a biologically derived material (e.g. recombinant antibodies, engineered proteins, aptamers etc) or a biomimic (e.g. synthetic receptors, biomimetic catalysts, combinatorial ligands, imprinted polymers etc) intimately associated with or integrated within a physicochemical transducer or transducing microsystem, which may be optical, electrochemical, thermometric, piezoelectric, magnetic or micromechanical (Turner et al., 1987; Turner, 1989). Biosensors usually yield a digital electronic signal which is proportional to the concentration of a specific analyte or group of analytes. While the signal may in principle be continuous, devices can be configured to yield single measurements to meet specific market requirements. Examples of Biosensors include immunosensors, enzyme-based biosensors, organism- and whole cell-based biosensors. They have been applied to a wide variety of analytical problems including uses in medicine, biomedical research, drug discovery, the environment, food, process industries, security and defence. The design and study of molecular and supramolecular structures with molecular biorecognition and biomimetic properties for use in analytical devices is also included within the scope of the journal. Here the focus is on the complementary intersection between molecular recognition, nanotechnology, molecular imprinting and supramolecular chemistry to improve the analytical performance and robustness of devices.The emerging field of Bioelectronics seeks to exploit biology in conjunction with electronics in a wider context encompassing, for example, biological fuel cells, bionics and biomaterials for information processing, information storage, electronic components and actuators. A key aspect is the interface between biological materials and micro- and nano-electronics.While endeavouring to maintain coherence in the scope of the journal, the editors will accept reviews and papers of obvious relevance to the community, which describe important new concepts, underpin understanding of the field or provide important insights into the practical application, manufacture and commercialisation of biosensors and bioelectronics.
